The Story Behind the Kopou Collection
Some stories begin with a sketch.
Others begin with a flower.
For us, the Kopou Collection began with a memory.
If you've ever celebrated Rongali Bihu in Assam, you've probably seen the Kopou Phool. Delicate and elegant, this orchid has long been a symbol of beauty, celebration, and cultural identity. Worn by women during Bihu festivities, the flower carries generations of tradition in its petals.
When we started designing the Kopou Collection at The Mug Atelier, we wanted to create something that felt connected to home. Not through loud symbols or obvious souvenirs, but through thoughtful design that carries meaning.
The result was a ceramic mug inspired by one of Assam's most cherished flowers.
What Is the Kopou Flower?
The Kopou Flower, also known as the Foxtail Orchid (Rhynchostylis retusa), is the state flower of Assam and an important part of Assamese culture.
Every spring, as Assam celebrates Rongali Bihu, the Kopou flower blooms across the region. It becomes more than a flower. It becomes a symbol of renewal, joy, and belonging.
For many Assamese families, seeing Kopou bloom marks the arrival of a new season filled with music, dance, and togetherness.
That feeling became the foundation of this collection.
Turning a Flower Into a Mug
Designing the Kopou Collection wasn't about printing a flower onto a mug.
We wanted to capture the feeling behind it.
Every curve, illustration, and design element was chosen to reflect the elegance of the orchid while keeping the mug modern enough for everyday use.
Whether you're enjoying your morning coffee, evening chai, or a quiet moment between busy days, the mug is meant to bring a small piece of that warmth into your routine.
Because meaningful design isn't just about how something looks.
It's about how it makes you feel.
A Piece of Assam in Every Order
With every Kopou Collection mug, we also include a small terracotta keepsake sourced from Asharikandi, one of Assam's most celebrated pottery villages.
Asharikandi's artisans have preserved traditional terracotta craftsmanship for generations. Each piece reflects a living heritage that continues to thrive through the hands of local makers.
By including this keepsake, we wanted every order to carry not only a product, but also a connection to the people and traditions that inspire us.
Why We Started The Mug Atelier
At The Mug Atelier, we believe everyday objects deserve more thought.
A mug isn't just something you drink from.
It's there during early mornings, late-night conversations, work sessions, celebrations, and quiet moments in between.
That's why our philosophy is simple:
Every Mug Tells a Story.
Some stories come from culture.
Some come from memories.
And some are created by the people who use them.
